Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three small islands or dyke contained in northwest Lombok. Trawangan is also the only dyke which height above sea level is significant. With a length of 3 km and 2 km wide, Trawangan population of about 800 inhabitants. Among the three dyke, Trawangan has facilities for tourists of the most diverse; tavern "Tir Na Nog" claims that Trawangan is the smallest island in the world is his Irish bar. The most densely populated part is east of the island.

Popular activities conducted in Trawangan is scuba diving (with PADI certified), snorkeling (on the northeast coast), kayaking, and surfing. There are also several places for tourists to learn to ride around the island.
On Gili Trawangan (as well as in two other dyke), there are no motorized vehicles, because it is not permitted by local regulations. Common means of transportation are bicycles (rented by local people for the tourists) and cidomo, simple horse-drawn carriage which are common in Lombok. To travel to and from the third dyke, people usually use motorized boats and speedboats.
Excess of Gili Trawangan compared to other beaches is that we can enjoy the sunset and sunrise at the same time on this beach! This happens because of Gili Trawangan has a beach facing east and overlooking the west, and the distance is not too far away. So that both sunrise and sunset can we enjoy at this beach.

Gili Trawangan also we can see the traditional martial art called Presean or stick fighting art market usually shown around Gili Trawangan. The most favorite activities of the tourists in this Gili namely Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing.
The island was once used as a dumping ground ever convict. At that time because all the prisons were full, a king who was ruling throwing 350 people rebel Sasak to this island. Only around 1970 the island was used as a stopover on the Bugis from Sulawesi, who later settled here with residents hereditary Sasak and Balinese.
